It is now possible to get the iOS 13 public beta on your iPhone and iPad. Users who cannot wait for the final version can already try out the test version. By following the steps in this tip, you will install the beta safely.
iOS 13 beta preparations: this is how you install the test version safely
Now that Apple has made the public beta available, you want to get started with all the new features as soon as possible. However, it remains a test version, which always involves risks. So, be wise and go through the three steps below to install iOS 13 beta safely.
1. Check if your iPhone or iPad supports iOS 13
Before you prepare yourself for this beta, it is a good idea to check if your iPhone or iPad supports iOS 13. This is of course mandatory in order to run the update. Unfortunately, not all iPhones that can now run iOS 12 also support the new software update.
This means that you can use the test version with the following iPhones, iPads and iPod touch:
iPhone
- iPhone 6S
- iPhone 6S Plus
- iPhone SE
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone X
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
iPad
- iPad mini 4
- iPad mini 2019
- iPad Pro (first generation)
- iPad Pro (second generation)
- iPad Pro (2018)
- iPad 2017
- iPad 2018
- iPad Air 2 (and newer)
iPod
- iPod touch seventh generation (2019)
2. Create a beta account
To use the trial version, you need a special beta account. You can create these in just a few minutes. It goes like this.
- Go to the beta website of Apple;
- Log in with your Apple ID and password;
- Click on ‘iOS’;
- Choose the device you want to install the beta on.
3. Make a backup of your device
The most important thing is that you make a backup of your device now. While the iOS 13 beta is a nice way to get started with all the new features months before release, it is primarily a test version. That means you get more freezes, the battery life decreases and your iPhone can also crash.
Apple therefore always emphasizes that you should not install a beta on your primary device. In addition to serious crash bugs, there are also minor errors that cause some apps to stop working or not work properly. Keep this in mind if you install the beta on the iPhone that you use intensively every day.
Always make a backup first, so that you can restore your data without any problems and go back to iOS 12. You can read all about making an iPhone backup in our guide below.

When is the final release of iOS 13?
An exact date is unknown, but usually Apple will always release the final versions of its software updates sometime in September. So it will be a while before the official release of iOS 13 arrives. Until then, you can also get a preview in our iOS 13 preview without downloading the beta.
