Of course you want to protect notes with sensitive information. Fortunately, you can shield notes from the outside world via a password, face scan and fingerprint. In this tip, we will show you how it works on iPhone, iPad and Mac (Book).
Protect notes on iPhone, iPad and Mac
Medical information, financial information, and passwords: You probably have a lot of personal information in your notes. To ensure that this data does not fall into the wrong hands, it is wise to protect it by means of a strong password, Face ID or Touch ID.
To protect notes on an iPhone and iPad:
- Open the Notes app and select the note you want to put under lock and key;
- Tap the share button in the top right and choose ‘Lock Note’;
- Enter a password that unlocks the note, confirm it and enter a password hint if necessary;
- At the top right, tap Done.
The note is now locked. Tap the lock in the top right to hide the note. You will now see in the Notes app that the content is no longer visible. The title will of course remain public. To unlock the entire message, confirm it’s you using Face ID or Touch ID.
You can of course also use the password specified in step three. It is not mandatory to provide a clue, but it is wise. If you have forgotten the password and Face ID or Touch ID is defective, you will otherwise no longer be able to view the content of the note.
Do you want to make the note ‘public’ again? Which can! To do this, open the note and tap the share button again. Now choose ‘Remove lock’. You can also change the password for notes by navigating to ‘Notes’ and then ‘Password’ in the Settings app of your iPad or iPhone. Here you first enter the old password and then the new password.

Do other people regularly use your Mac? Then it is wise to protect sensitive information properly. Fortunately, securing notes on a Mac (Book) is very simple and works like this:
- Open the Notes app and choose the note you want to lock;
- Click on the lock icon and choose ‘Lock note’;
- The note is now protected.
Have you not yet set a password to open the note? Then click on ‘Notes’ in the menu bar, choose ‘Preferences’ and then click on ‘Set password’. If you have several accounts, select the correct profile before setting the password. Click on ‘Done’ once you are done. If you no longer want to protect the note, click on the lock again and choose ‘Remove lock’.
