Cleaning an iPhone in 5 steps: this is how you do it

You probably use your phone all day so it gets dirty over time. Fortunately, cleaning an iPhone is a piece of cake. iPhone shows how it works.

Cleaning the iPhone in 5 steps

Greasy fingers, dust and sand: your iPhone is filthier than you think. According to multiple studies, the average smartphone contains more than 11,000 bacteria per inch. That makes your beloved iPhone ten times as dirty as a toilet seat.

However, this statement is somewhat misleading. Contrary to popular belief, most people keep the smallest room very clean. However, it is clear that the average smartphone is quite dirty. Cleaning your iPhone every now and then is therefore very sensible.

You need this

  • Two microfiber cloths
  • Cleaning alcohol (or a little water)
  • Cotton swab
  • Soft brush or toothbrush

You use the first microfiber cloth to clean the dirty surface, with the second you wipe the device. The cleaning alcohol is good for removing grease and grime, but a little water will do the trick. Never apply these products directly to your iPhone, but use a cloth.

1. Remove dust

Cleaning your iPhone starts with removing dust. However, dust can contain sand particles, so don’t just wipe it off with your hands. After all, you don’t want to scratch your iPhone screen. Instead, use a brush. Also turn off the iPhone beforehand.

2. Clean the screen

Do you have an iPhone 7 or newer model? Then your smartphone is resistant to water. In that case, you can clean the screen with a microfiber cloth and put some alcohol on it (or use water). Wring the cloth well and gently wipe the screen without using force. People with an older model should not use water or alcohol solution.

The combination of alcohol and microfibre ensures that all grease comes off the screen. Make circular movements with your hand while cleaning. Once you are done wiping, repeat this step one more time, but this time with the dry microfiber cloth.

3. Clean the charging port

Dust is electronics’ worst enemy. This stuff eventually ends up in all openings, including the charging port. That is annoying, because this ultimately charges your iPhone less quickly, or even stops working at all.

It is therefore wise to pick up stuck dust particles with a cotton swab. Be careful, because you don’t have to touch any parts; they are very sensitive. If you have an iPhone with a separate headphone input, it is wise to also remove dust.

4. Clean the iPhone speaker

Fortunately, cleaning your iPhone speaker is even easier. Use a toothbrush to do this and gently rub the speaker holes on the bottom of the device. Is your device waterproof? Then rinse them under the tap and test whether the speakers are properly clean by conducting a test call or turning on a video or music at full volume.

5. Finish with the outside

Cleaning your iPhone ends with the outside. First take it with a brush (to remove the dust) and then use a microfiber cloth to remove grease and other dirt. You can also use cleaning alcohol or water for this. Finish cleaning your iPhone by wiping it with a dry cloth.
