Tip: This is how widgets work in iOS 14

One of the biggest visual changes in iOS 14 compared to its predecessor is the arrival of widgets. The functional app windows are very easy to use. In this article we explain how it works.

Tip: Add and stack widgets in iOS 14

If you’ve ever owned an Android smartphone, you’re probably already familiar with widgets. This gives a smaller version of an app a permanent place on your home screen. Without opening the app, you can read information directly from your home screen. For example, if you have a weather widget, you will immediately see the forecast of the day.

Adding widgets: this is how you do it

To set up widgets, you must first download and install iOS 14. You can then add all kinds of widgets to your home screen.

  1. To do this, long press the screen until the app icons start to wobble;
  2. Press the plus sign at the top left;
  3. Here you will see a list of available widgets;
  4. Tap the widget you want to add to your home screen;
  5. Drag the widget to the desired location;
  6. Tap Done.

The widget has now been added to your home screen. You can move or delete these at any time. To do this, long press the screen again and press the minus button in the left corner of the widget to remove it.

This is how you set up a widget stack

Do you want different widgets on your home screen, but don’t want them taking up too much space? Then it is also possible to stack widgets on top of each other. You can then scroll through the different widgets on your home screen. That is very easy.

  1. First add the desired widgets to your home screen;
  2. Long press your screen so that the widgets and app icons start to wiggle;
  3. Then drag the widgets over each other.

The widgets will now automatically stack. You can repeat these steps to add multiple widgets to the stack. Do you want to adjust the stack? Then long press the widget and choose ‘Edit stack’. Here you can change the order of the widgets, or remove widgets from the stack by swiping left. Tap ‘delete’ to remove widgets from the stack.

Do you want to delete the entire stack? Then long press the screen again until the app icons wobble. Then tap the minus in the top left corner of the stack.

More iOS 14 features

Since September 16, iOS 14 is available for all iPhones that can also work with iOS 13. The widgets are an important addition, because for the first time Apple allows iPhone users to compose their own home screen.

The update brings many more improvements. For example, you can perform actions with Tap on the back and you can set your own default browser. Read all about the new iOS 14 features in our overview article.
