iPad 2021: 7 expectations for the entry-level tablet of 2021

The new entry-level model of the iPad seems to be a modest update, which makes the tablet a bit better. These are our expectations for the iPad 2021.

iPad 2021 expectations

With the Pro, Air, mini and regular iPad, there is plenty to choose from, but the entry-level model has been the most popular choice for years. That will be no different this year. While the iPad 2021 doesn’t seem to be making groundbreaking improvements, the things that are changing are all worth it.

iPad 2021: 7 expectations for the entry-level tablet of 2021

1. Improved image quality due to laminated screen

The most important part of an iPad is of course the screen. Good news, then, that Apple is finally doing something about the image quality of the regular iPad, which is now well behind the rest.

According to rumors, Apple is introducing a laminated screen, which removes the layer of air between the glass and display. This not only ensures a better image, but you also see much less reflection. Handy if you ever use the iPad outside. In terms of size, Apple will go for a 10.2-inch display this year. Big enough to run two apps side by side with iPadOS multitasking features.

2. Thinner and lighter design

The iPad Air followed the iPad Pro last year with a borderless screen, but for the regular iPad this is not yet that far in 2021. Apple would also opt for a classic design this year, which will be slightly thinner and lighter.

In terms of design, the tablet will therefore look more like the iPad Air from 2019. That does not make it the most modern design, but one that has proven its quality for years.

3. Touch ID instead of Face ID

The iPad 2021 is the entry-level model, and to keep that price as low as possible, Apple will not add advanced features such as Face ID. Even the more expensive iPad Air 2020 doesn’t have a Face ID, so don’t count on being able to unlock this iPad just by looking at it.

Instead, the iPad 2021 will just get a Touch ID button that is integrated into the screen edge. Only when the tablet switches to a more modern design will this change.

4. Apple Pencil 1 support

While the rumors are already talking about an Apple Pencil 3, the iPad 2021 again only seems to be able to handle the classic first-generation Apple Pencil. By not changing the design and keeping the Lightning connection, that is the only Pencil that can handle the tablet. Only when the iPad gets a squarer design like the Air or Pro can a new Pencil be added.

5. New chip makes iPad future-proof

A new year, a new chip for the iPad. This year, the tablet will again be equipped with a modern variant of the A-series chips developed by Apple. This is badly needed, because the iPad is known for its long lifespan thanks to years of support for iPadOS updates.

With the iPad 2021, Apple will again have to deliver a tablet that can handle the latest functions of iPadOS for at least five years. This also includes a chip that is future-proof enough for that.

6. The same price as the iPad 2020

It is expected that Apple will hardly change the price of the iPad compared to last year. The company has now clearly divided its range of tablets: a smaller iPad mini, relatively cheap iPad, the slightly more expensive iPad Air and pricey iPad Pro. Because the Pro and Air are also expected to be priced identically, it will probably be the same for the iPad 2021. That would mean the following.

  • iPad 2021 (32GB) – 388.50 euros
  • iPad 2021 (128GB) – 488.50 euros

7. May be unveiled April 20

The rumors are not completely agreed, but there is a chance that we will see the new iPad tomorrow. Then Apple will organize the first Apple event of the year at 7 p.m. Dutch time. Do you want to know what else we expect there? Check out our handy overview with Apple event expectations.
