Isn’t the default Photos app on your iPhone comprehensive enough? Or would you like a free backup of all your photos? Then you should give Google Photos a try.
Google Photos iOS offers unlimited photo storage
Google Photos has rapidly become an indispensable app for smartphone users. Google’s photo service is primarily a free way to back up all your photos online. This way they are safe if your iPhone breaks, is stolen or is unusable in any other way. Unlike Apple’s iCloud photo library, the storage capacity is unlimited, although the quality is scaled back slightly.
You can also access your photos on multiple devices by logging in with your Google account and backing up. Sync your album and your snapshots will be immediately visible on your Mac, iPad or other device with a browser.

If you’ve made the switch to Google Photos, you can also free up storage space on your iPhone at the touch of a button. All photos that are currently in both Google Photos and your photo library will be deleted, so that you have extra local storage again.
Those are a number of practical reasons to start using Google Photos, but the photo service goes a big step further. For example, there is a smart search function that uses locations, machine learning and object recognition, among other things. This way you will find all your cat pictures when you search for ‘cats’, without having to manually label the pictures. The app also regularly proposes self-composed albums, for example from your vacation or weekend away.

The smart search function of Google Photos
This smart search function in particular is the reason that we return to the app again and again. With iOS 10, Apple took the first step by adding facial recognition to the Photos app, but Google’s alternative is more accessible and smarter. For example, a simple search term such as ‘beach’ provides a handy overview of all your beach photos. Especially if your iPhone is enough with thousands of photos and you have lost the overview for years. Creating albums manually at that time takes too much time, while this smart search function makes your entire photo library manageable in one fell swoop.
Google has divided the app into three tabs: Photos is the large overview of all photos, which are bundled in the Albums tab. Here, the app also makes suggestions for new smart albums, which are created based on your collection. Finally, Assistant is the smart part of the app. Here you use the smart search function, create albums, collages, animations and see if other actions are needed. Thanks to AirPlay support, you can easily send a photo or entire album to an Apple TV to view it on your TV.
Google Photos also has a simple but handy editing function. This makes it possible to quickly restore or crop an image, without opening a separate app. Add to this the constant stream of useful updates and it is very difficult not to make the switch to Google’s alternative photo app.
