You should know this about the screen of the iPad Pro 2021

The screen of the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro is a significant improvement over its predecessor. But what exactly has changed? And what about the 11-inch model? You should know this about the screen of the iPad Pro 2021.

Meet the screen of the iPad Pro 2021

During the presentation of the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Apple blew high from the tower over the screen. That bears the name Liquid Retina XDR display. We already know the term XDR (Extreme Dynamic Range) from the Pro Display XDR, Apple’s very expensive monitor for graphics professionals.

It is a so-called mini LED screen. Behind the display is a matrix with more than 10,000 LEDs and 2500 dimmable zones. This has a number of advantages.

For example, the new iPad Pro achieves a maximum brightness of no less than 1000 nits. The iPad Pro 2020 came to 600. The peak brightness is even 1600 nits, which means that the display can be even brighter for a short time. That is especially nice if you watch a movie in HDR and something explodes, for example. Such an explosion will be almost literally dazzling on this iPad.

The contrast is also much better. Because the screen contains so many dimmable zones, parts of the screen can be switched off. That means that black parts are really black.

The contrast ratio of the screen in the iPad Pro 2021 is no less than 1,000,000: 1. Its predecessor only got to about 1500: 1. OLED screens sometimes have an even better (in principle infinite) contrast, but achieve a less high brightness.

For Apple itself, mini-LED has some advantages over OLED. For example, mini LED screens are less sensitive to burn-in and therefore last longer. In addition, they are easier to produce and the costs per screen are a lot lower.

How about the 11 inch variant?

Do you think the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is too big? The new 11-inch version also has a great display, of course. However, it is the same LCD screen that was already in the iPad Pro 2018 and iPad Pro 2020. So you have to do without the mentioned improvements of its bigger brother. It would not surprise us if the next 11-inch iPad Pro does have an XDR display.
