The week is over and that means that a fresh app overview is waiting for you! In our opinion, you should not miss these new apps, games and updates. You can find the best iOS apps from week 36 here.

The best iOS apps at a glance

The App Store works overtime every week to handle the never-ending stream of new apps and updates. However, you will hardly notice this, because only a small part is worth installing. If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch can use some new apps, you’ve come to the right place.

1. Google Arts & Culture

The Art Selfie feature of the Google Arts & Culture app is finally available in the Netherlands. With Google Art Selfie you can see which historical painting you look like. To find your historical double, take a selfie in the app. Google then scans its extensive art collection for the most resembling character in a painting. The app features thousands of paintings from more than 650 affiliated art institutions and collections.

Then you see several matching paintings and what percentage the painted person and you are alike. But the app is actually meant for much more than ‘art selfies’. You will find virtual 360-degree tours through the most beautiful museums, highlighted art collections, interviews and inspiration. For example, you can also read various background stories about ancient or striking tribes and groups from all over the world.

2. WhatsApp

WhatsApp for iOS has received a major update, which adds a number of useful new features. The most important improvement of the WhatsApp update is that you can now view received media, such as photos and GIFs, directly from your notifications. Normally you will always see the message ‘Photo’, but from now on photos and gifs can be downloaded directly from the notifications, and you do not have to open the WhatsApp app every time.

In addition, the app now automatically recognizes suspicious links. For this, special characters in the url are looked at, such as the ‘ẉ’ instead of a normal ‘w’. If this is the case, you will receive a notification in the chat conversation. Finally, WhatsApp now supports the Wallet app on your iPhone. From now on you can also share loyalty cards, payment cards and airline tickets via WhatsApp. The features do not immediately work for everyone, but will be rolled out gradually.

3. Workshop

Always wanted to make that perfect cocktail or pasta? The Workshop app teaches you step-by-step through short videos. With this app you can learn new skills by literally taking a look behind the scenes of experts. Workshop is currently mainly about cooking, but in the future you can also master other skills such as clothing making.

From the home screen you can immediately get started with a course, for example making a pie crust, after which you will see what you need and how long it will take. All courses are taught in English by a renowned kitchen guru. After going through all the steps you can indicate how it went and possibly add photos of your end product. In your personal library you can keep track of your current courses and watch the videos as often as necessary.

Workshop has three free courses: making flatbread / cake fillings and shaking cocktails. You have to pay for the other sessions. For example, a 4.5-hour cake decorating course costs 11 euros. This is pricey, but for a personal workshop you pay more.

4. Fortnite

Epic introduces a completely new mode for Fortnite in a new update: ‘Getaway’. This mode is available for a limited time only and is part of the High Stakes event currently running. Think of Getaway as a bank robbery. Four safes have been dropped randomly around the island. In the safe is a precious jewel, which you must get hold of first with a team of four.

Also new is the Grappler, a weapon that allows you to move around the island much faster. You can aim the Grappler at an object during a game, so that you ‘fly’ there quickly. Furthermore, the controls of Fortnite on iOS have been slightly improved.

5. Google Chrome

Google Chrome has been around for ten years, and to celebrate that, Google has released a major update with a new design. The browser has been given a new look with rounder edges, new icons and brighter colors. In addition, there is a greatly improved password manager and the browser now enters your passwords, address details and credit card number better and faster.

The search bar at the top of Chrome now provides smart answers. This way you can see what the weather forecast will be without opening a website or request the final score of a football match. Google also keeps an eye on the open tabs, so that you can immediately return to an open website if you enter it in the search bar. Finally, you can now personalize the browser much more and Chrome has received support for 3D Touch.
