At WWCC 2021, Apple unveiled an update for macOS: macOS 12 Monterey. The new version does not bring any major changes, but does contain useful improvements.
macOS 12 Monterey officially announced
Before the WWDC 2021 keynote kicked off, we secretly knew that macOS 12 wasn’t going to be a huge update. After all, its predecessor, macOS Big Sur, did bring major innovations with it. Especially in the design area, Apple took the biggest step in years with this update. But under the hood a lot was adjusted with Apple Silicon and a big Safari update.
macOS 12 has been given the name Monterey and, on the other hand, focuses on smaller improvements, which make the operating system for Apple computers a bit better and nicer to use. We discuss the most important with you.
Universal Control
A new feature of macOC Monterey is Universal Control. This allows you to collaborate much better with multiple Apple devices. For example, if you’re using a MacBook and iPad side by side, you can use your MacBook’s trackpad to control your iPad.
It’s even possible to drag files from your MacBook to your iPad (and vice versa). This works with more than two devices by the way. Even if you use an iMac, you can control it with your Apple laptop’s trackpad and mouse.
AirPlay to Mac
AirPlay is coming to the Mac. This allows you to ‘stream’ images or music to your Apple computer, just like with the Apple TV. This is especially useful if you want to view a photo or video on the big screen of your MacBook or iMac, for example.
In addition, Assignments are coming to the Mac with the Monterey update. This makes it possible to run a sequence with a single ‘shortcut’. Several improvements that are also in iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, such as the revamped Notes and Maps app, are also coming to macOS Monterey.
You will also soon be able to get started with SharePlay in FaceTime, with which you can share media with friends or family members in the video calling app.
Nice update for Safari
Finally, Safari gets a nice update in Monterey. The browser has been given a new look, with Apple making the whole thing clearer. For example, tabs are displayed more efficiently in the Tab Bar. The new Tab Groups allow you to collect tabs from websites and put them together for easy access later. For example, if you are going on a trip and have looked up different web pages and want to view them later.
When will macOS 12 be released?
Although Apple announced the macOS 12 update tonight, it will take some time before you can get started with the new features. It will most likely be released in the fall. Until then, Tim Cook’s company is releasing several beta versions to properly test the update. A public test version will be released next month, which normal users can also download and install.
