Quibi review: short episodes are fun, but also clumsy

The new streaming service Quibi is aimed at millennials, with episodes that last no longer than ten minutes and can only be watched on a smartphone. You can read everything in our Quibi review.

Quibi review: short but sweet

Streaming services are springing up like mushrooms, but the new Quibi is different from the rest. You can only watch Quibi on your smartphone and all episodes are shorter than ten minutes each. Ideal for on the go.

The service immediately starts with fifty different shows to watch and there is a lot of variety in between. There are exciting high quality drama series, comedies that can be very funny in a short time and false reality television full of fun. There is something for everyone, and you don’t have to get bored for long, because new episodes are added every day.

The technique

The series are therefore specifically made to watch via a smartphone. It’s nice that it doesn’t matter whether you look horizontally or vertically. Although you always get the most horizontally, shows can also be viewed vertically. The entire screen is then filled with the most important thing in the picture.

The app also has other features. Press the screen and swipe up and the show will be muted. In addition, everything can be downloaded so that you can watch offline. And a small but nice detail is that subtitles in English can be made, without all sounds being subtitled. Unfortunately, Dutch subtitles are still missing.

the shows

The most important thing about a streaming service is of course the content and Quibi surprises with that. With fifty shows there is something for everyone to see. Although not every series or cut film is of high quality, Quibi knows how to deliver decent quality. Below we discuss a number of series that are worth checking out.

When The Streetlights Go On

In this series, the body of a teenager is found next to her English teacher with whom she had an affair. While the series contains a lot of teen drama clichés, nothing is what it seems. This is a show that you keep watching because you want to know how the fork is in the handle. The atmosphere and acting also keep you glued to the screen for ten minutes at a time.

I promise

This beautiful documentary series follows children at the I Promise school, founded by Lebron James. These kids have difficult lives, but in this place they get a new chance. That makes for an emotional and beautiful series.

Dishmantled

Do you miss Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? The cooking show Dishmantled may have been picked from that series. Titus Burgess shoots food at two blindfolded chefs. Then the chefs have to guess which dish is on the wall and their shoes and copy it.

Survive

Sophie Turner plays a suicidal young woman who must do everything she can to survive after a plane crash. An intense viewing experience, but luckily you get some breathing space after every ten minutes.

flipped

In this comedy series, a bunch of houses decide to flip. As soon as they demolish the wall of their first project, they find piles of money. They spend that very quickly, but then the owner comes back. A hilarious show with Kaitlin Olsen and Will Forte.

So we can still name a stack of shows that are worth watching, and in the coming period only things will be added. Quibi has invested a lot of money in content and it clearly shows.

Clumsy

Quibi is therefore a great streaming service that focuses entirely on watching on the go, but now that we mainly have to sit at home, it is striking how inconvenient that actually is. There is no possibility to watch the images on your television and thus experience them together. Watching Quibi is really a ‘solo activity’ and that’s a shame. The shows are good enough to want to share with each other.

Are you interested? Quibi is free to try for 90 days. After that, the service costs 8.99 euros per month. The app can be downloaded from the App Store via the link below.
