How to change the system language of your Mac or Windows PC

By default, the system language of your Mac and Windows PC matches the language of the country where you purchased your desktop or laptop. If you bought your PC in the Netherlands, the system language is also Dutch. Do you want to change that? We explain how you do that.

Change language on Mac

To change your Mac’s system language, go to the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen. Open System Preferences and click Language and Region. Drag the desired language to the top position in the list of preferred languages. If the language you want is not in the list, click + to add it. Apple makes a distinction between languages that are fully supported in macOS and those that are not fully supported. In the latter case, a language is only available on certain websites and apps you use.

Change language in Windows

In Windows 10 you can go to the start menu and click Settings and then on Time and language. On the left side of the menu bar, tap Language: Here you can change the display language. If you only see Dutch, you have to go to the option Add a language to be. Search for a language and you will immediately see whether it is supported as a display language, speech recognition or text-to-speech. Choose the language and press Next one. You will now be prompted to download and install the language pack. After the language pack is installed, you can find the language in the drop-down menu under Windows display language.

In the drop-down menu you will find all language packs installed on your PC.

Change language for specific apps

If you only want to change the language for certain apps, that’s also possible. On your Mac, go back to Language and Region and click apps. Press + to select an app and language from the pop-up menus and click add. You will notice that it can differ per app which languages are supported.

You can then change the language of an app at any time in the resulting list. You can also remove an app from the list again. If you do this, the default language of the app will be used again.

In Windows 10, it is a bit more difficult to adjust the language for certain apps. You usually adjust this in the app itself. You can choose a different language for all apps and websites, while the system language remains Dutch. To do this, in the Language menu, pressmenu Apps and websites and make sure the language you want to see apps and websites in is at the top.
