In addition to sending written messages, WhatsApp also allows you to easily make group calls with both video and audio. In this tip we show you how to do this.
WhatsApp group calling in iOS
It is also possible to make group calls with FaceTime, but it is difficult that every participant must have an Apple device. To have a group conversation in WhatsApp, it doesn’t matter whether participants use an Android phone or iPhone.
You can start an audio or video call with up to four people at the same time. That number is relatively low, especially if you compare it with competing services such as FaceTime and Skype, in which you can have an audio or video call with 32 and 24 people respectively.
This is how you make group calls via WhatsApp:
- open WhatsApp;
- Tap the ‘Conversations’ tab;
- Then tap the plus icon in the top right corner;
- On the next screen, tap on ‘New Group Conversation’;
- Choose the people you want to call. So this can be a maximum of three others;
- With the buttons on the screen you can switch between a video and audio call.
Even if one of the participants in the conversation has a bad internet connection, you should still be able to conduct a good video conversation. WhatsApp emphasizes that all conversations (as well as written messages) are protected with end-to-end encryption. With this, the service retains its strong privacy measures.

Then read our 4 tips to better secure WhatsApp. For the time being, it is only possible to start a group conversation with the WhatsApp smartphone app. WhatsApp Web on a laptop or PC does not support the function (yet). If you still want to make group calls via your laptop, it’s better to use Google Hangouts or Zoom.
