Google is testing apps on the Nest Hub smart display, here’s how it works

The advantage of smart screens compared to smart speakers is that you don’t need voice commands for everything. The screen has an interface that allows you to browse through the information, and Google is now experimenting with that interface.

Smart screens have long had a tabbed view, giving you access to media, smart home controls and other functions. Google is now considering combining all those functions in some kind of app view. This is evident from an interface that Canadian Reddit User already seen on the Nest Hub Max. It is also not the first time that a user gets the app view on his smart display. We see, among other things: timer, weather, spotify, YouTube, YouTube Music, shopping, Google news, Meet, Agenda and games.

Convenient display

Because it concerns pre-existing functions of smart screens, there is no possibility to download apps like there is on the Play Store. It’s just a different view, but an interface that seems logical. There is already an app drawer on Android phones, and even in Android Auto, where voice control also plays an important role, you can browse all apps from an overview. If smart displays are also given such an option, it will fit perfectly in the same line.

For the time being, it only seems to be an experiment by Google, but it would not surprise us that this interface will be rolled out to more users in the long term. We think it is really an added value for smart screens, and certainly at times when voice control is not possible due to circumstances.

Smart displays recently received a new operating system Fuchsia. What do you think? Would you like this view? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
