The Spotify songwriter function: that’s how it works


Spotify has started an experiment with special pages for songwriters. If you press the music credits for a song, you will get a list of the writers who contributed to the song in question. Recently it is possible to click on the name of the writer, after which you will end up on a songwriter page. Credits have been listed on songs in Spotify since 2018, but it has never been possible to click on songwriter names to see what other songs they have contributed to. So far, because Spotify is currently testing the songwriter pages.

To go to a songwriter page, click on the three horizontal dots behind a song and select Music credits. Then click on a songwriter and you will end up on his or her page (especially the most famous songwriters have their own page). You will also find the button on this page Listen on Spotify. If you press this you will get a playlist of songs to which the songwriter contributed.

For example, if you dive into the credits the song Sorry by Justin Bieber, you will find there among others Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, both of which have their own songwriter page. Other songwriters who got their own page include Meghan Trainor, Missy Elliott and Teddy Geiger.

Although you can dive into the credits of a song through the Spotify app, you will be directed to your browser if you want to visit a songwriter page. This is not yet very convenient. It will be annoying for the songwriters themselves that their songwriter page doesn’t show a picture of themselves, but the cover of their most successful songs.

Multiple streaming platforms have started paying attention to credits in recent years, including YouTube. And that is paying off: many music lovers say they discover new music by diving into the credits of a song. Songwriters also welcome a renewed focus on music credits. Songwriters still earn a lot less from streaming than the performing artists.

Various Dutch writers react to pop platform 3voor12 enthusiastic on the songwriter pages in Spotify, but still say that in terms of streaming income, they get off the ground. “Something really needs to change.”
