The leaves of the tea plant naturally contain caffeine. Sometimes this is also called Teein designated. From a chemical point of view, however, it is identical to the caffeine in the coffee – and also has the same invigorating effect. A cup of black tea contains about half as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. However, since the caffeine in tea is absorbed more slowly by the body, the invigorating effect is weaker, but more long-lasting.

Here are some other ingredients in black tea and their effects:

  • Black tea contains theaflavins, which help in the fermentation from green to black tea. They have many health benefits. Among other things, they have an antibacterial effect and can counteract high cholesterol levels.
  • In return, black tea has fewer tannins overall than green tea. Nevertheless, it retains its health-promoting effects. the Tannins – also called tannins – lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and also have an antibacterial effect.
  • In addition, the black tea contains smaller amounts of vitamins and trace elements such as vitamin B, manganese and potassium.

The effect as well as the taste of your tea depend on the type of tea you choose. The most famous varieties are Darjeeling, Ceylon, Assam and Earl Gray. No matter what you choose, you should make sure that you Fair trade tea buy. With your purchase you are supporting fair environmental and social standards, which unfortunately are rarely met with conventional tea products.

Tip: Black tea is traditionally the basis of the spicy Chai tea.

Making black tea isn’t quite as complicated as making green tea. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • The amount of tea you use to make it also affects how much caffeine your tea contains. Too few leaves will make your tea watery. If you use too much, it can quickly taste bitter. We therefore recommend using around two grams of tea for each cup (250 ml) – this corresponds to a slightly heaped teaspoon.
  • The water temperature can make all the difference. Even if it is often recommended that tea only be poured with bubbly hot water, the optimal temperature for black tea may be lower. Depending on the type of tea, it is between 90 and 95 degrees.
  • The water itself can affect the taste of the tea. Water that is particularly calcareous can leave a thin film on the tea and give it an unpleasant furry taste. You will achieve better results with filtered water or mineral water.
  • The tea leaves need space when drawn to swell and release their ingredients into the water. There is usually not enough space for this in a tea bag or tea infuser that is too small. You can find a good, reusable tea filter in drugstores, tea shops and on the Internet, for example at ** Memolife or Amazon.

The brewing time and its influence on the effect

There are many myths about black tea brewing time. Basically it is correct that a steeping time of one to three minutes is completely sufficient for a good tea. Then the caffeine from the tea leaves is completely dissolved in the water. After this steeping time, the tea has a delicate, floral taste.

If you let your tea steep for more than three minutes, the proportion of tannins in the water increases. This ensures that the tea has a tart to bitter taste. The tannins also bind the caffeine and thus change its effect. The bound caffeine is absorbed by the body much more slowly. The invigorating effect does not start immediately, but slowly over several hours.

This fact is the origin of a popular myth that black tea has a calming effect after brewing for five minutes or more. However, there is no tenable scientific justification for this. The tea is then at best less invigorating than with shorter brewing times.

Black tea has an effect on digestion

If black tea brews longer, more tannins are released from the tea leaves. These tannins have a calming effect on the intestines. That means that a high consumption of black tea too constipation can lead if other unfavorable factors are added.

Conversely, it also means that black tea is an effective one Home remedies for diarrhea can be if he could pull for more than five minutes.
