Fast charging, what is it?

Fast chargers live up to their name. They charge devices, such as phones and tablets, at lightning speed. But how is that possible and is it safe?

A phone or tablet that is empty. It is the nightmare for many. Waiting while charging can therefore seem to take a long time. Fast chargers can offer a solution. The name says it all: fast chargers are chargers that charge a device in a shorter time. They do this by supplying more power to the battery. With normal chargers, that is 5 watts. With fast chargers it is more than 18 watts.

Fast chargers only charge the first part of the charge at top speed. Then they go over to the usual charging speed. So from an empty battery to 50 to 80 percent goes extra fast, and the next 30 to 50 percent goes at normal speed. This is to prevent the battery from overheating or overcharging.

Fast charging is only possible if both the chargers and the device support the function. If either doesn’t, the device will charge at normal speed. Before you buy a special charger, it is therefore wise to first check whether the device is suitable. For example, fast charging can be done on an iPhone 8 or newer and on a Samsung Galaxy S6 or newer. In addition, a charger (including cable) is required that can charge quickly.

Chargers have a security system. They coordinate with the device what the charging speed is. If the watts of the charger and the device differ, the lowest speed is automatically used. It is important to purchase a good charger. So from a reliable manufacturer and certified. Fast charging isn’t bad for the battery either. This is due to the protection that ensures that the battery does not receive more watts than it can handle.
