Install updates automatically on a Mac

Don’t feel like checking for new updates? Then activate automatic updating on the Mac.

Apple regularly releases updates. It could be minor improvements to programs, security updates, or a completely new version of the operating system. This latest update often provides completely new options, adds programs or replaces old software with improved variants. The appearance is also sometimes addressed with a macOS update. Features like Spotlight, Time Machine, Siri, and Dashboard have been added over time. Updates are therefore important for your security, but also keep the computer up to date.

From the Mojave operating system, the Mac can automatically download and install updates. You do need to set that:

  • Click the Apple logo in the top left.
  • click on System Preferences.
  • click on software update.
  • click on Advanced.
  • It is important that the check marks are on Look for updates and Install system files and security updates.
  • Put a check in Download new updates when available and with Install macOS updates if you want the operating system to be updated automatically. If you only use the standard Apple programs, this is useful. If you also use programs from other providers, keep it in your own hands and choose when you download and install a new version of the operating system.
  • put eand check Install app updates from the App Store to update programs automatically.
  • Optionally enter ‘Username’ and ‘Password’ to consent to this change.
