Creating a backup can be a very smart idea for many reasons. You can simply need them in countless ways. But then you must of course know how to restore them to iPhone or iPad.
In this article, we’ll explain which type of backup is simply the best, how to make it, and how to restore it to your iPhone or iPad.
iPhone and iPad: iCloud or local?
You can back up your iPhone or iPad in two different ways: via iCloud or locally. Both ways are doable, although the first really brings a lot of advantages. This makes it easy to make the update from your iPhone or iPad, without the need for a computer. In addition, more things are stored with a copy on iCloud.
With a backup on a computer, things like Face ID or Touch ID settings, Apple Pay information, Apple Mail data and data around apps such as Mail and Health are missing. So it’s best to just make a backup via iCloud, where all this information is simply added.

How to make a backup
A backup via iCloud is quite easy to make. You can do this from your iPhone or iPad and without a computer or hassle with cables. Go to Settings -> your username -> iCloud -> iCloud Backup -> Backup Now.
Want to make a backup on your Mac? Then connect your iPhone to your computer via a cable, select the smartphone in the sidebar of your Mac and choose the option Back up all data on your iPhone on this Mac.
iPhone and iPad: this is how you restore a backup
Now that you know what different backups there are, and how to make them, let’s look at how to restore such a backup. Before you get started, it’s good to know that you first have to completely reset your iPhone or iPad. You do that by going to Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone to go and the option Clear all content and settings to select. You will then be taken to a screen where all your data is stored. Choose Continue, enter the passcode of your iPhone or iPad and voila!

Now that your iPhone or iPad is completely empty, it’s time to restore your backup. You do this with the following steps:
- Turn on the iPhone or iPad
- Swipe up (Face ID) or press the Home button (Touch ID) on the Hey-screen
- Select your language
- Select the country
- Select a Wifi network
- Then press the button Set manually
- On the next screen, choose the option Restore from iCloud Backup
- Sign in with your Apple ID and password
- Select the correct backup
From that moment on, your iPhone or iPad will restore all your data. By the way, keep in mind that all your applications will only be downloaded after the complete installation. So it can take a while before your smartphone is fully usable.
