Update drivers on Windows 11: this is how you do it

Usually, you don’t need to update drivers, whether you’re using Windows 10 or Windows 11. Certain components sometimes require an update, such as a graphics card. But in many cases, if it isn’t broken… Still, a driver update can sometimes solve a specific problem. We explain how you can update drivers in Windows 11.

The above mainly applies to updates that you install manually, for example by getting the necessary software from the manufacturer’s website. Because in many cases Windows 11 keeps the drivers up-to-date. So if there are minor updates available for accessories such as controllers or components such as touchpads, Windows 11 will resolve these itself when you update your system.

Furthermore, Windows offers many driver updates as optional, eliminating the need. Sometimes such updates actually break something, so it’s better to leave the situation as it was. But updating isn’t always a bad idea.

Are you encountering specific problems with certain components or external devices? Then open the settings (Windows + i) and select Windows Update. Then go to the advanced options. In the next menu, look for the button for optional updates. Under the heading for driver updates you will find a list of updates that are available.

Open the list and select, via the box to the left, which optional driver updates you want to install. Once you’ve done that, click at the bottom right Download and install. After installing asks Windows 11 whether you want to restart the computer. Do that and everything will be arranged for you.

In some cases you will need to update drivers manually, such as the aforementioned graphics card. To do this, visit the part or accessory manufacturer’s website and locate the latest driver firmware. Download what you need and be careful not to download the wrong files or visit the wrong websites. Now open the start menu and type device manager in. Select the top option of the search results.

Now find the driver to be updated and select it with your right mouse button. Select the option to update manually and indicate that you want to look up the file locally. Now look for the newly downloaded drivers (so put them in a handy place) and follow the steps in the screen by clicking Next one to push.

If updating is necessary, Windows 11 will now install the drivers. If it is not necessary, the system will indicate this and you do not need to take any further action. If you still have a problem, then there may be no solution available yet.
