What’s in a battery?

Asker: Dieter, age 13

Answer

The parts of a battery are:

– an anode (where an oxidation takes place, ie an electron is released) and a cathode (where a reduction takes place, ie an electron is taken up); these are the electrodes

– an electrolyte containing the ions which in turn react with an anode and cathode and carry the current

– a housing and connection terminals
