AirPods Max
(Image: Apple)
The AirPods Max are one of the best headphones on the market. Still, it can all be just a little better and then we are not talking about the price this time. OMT editor Jeroen tells you which upgrades we would like to see in the next model.
The AirPods Max is Apple’s flagship when it comes to audio. You have to pay a lot of money for the headphones. The gadget will cost you 629 euros in the Apple Store, but luckily there are stores that offer it cheaper. You can score it in various stores for 489 euros. Good, still a lot of money, but at least a little more manageable.
Refreshing the AirPods Max
When you spend that much money on headphones, you really want the best of the best. Colleague Mark already told in his review what you can expect from the AirPods Max. Time does not stand still and so it can now be just that little bit better. We list the improvements we would like to see in a new version.

#1 Lossless audio
As mentioned, you pay a lot for your AirPods Max. For that price, there should actually be lossless audio possible. Especially since Apple Music itself also supports this. Often audio files are made smaller so that it does not take up too much memory. Original source files are often lost, resulting in a partial loss of quality. That is not the case with lossless audio. If the new Max supports this, you will have slightly better sound quality.
#2 Ear Detection
It probably happens regularly that you set up your AirPods Max incorrectly. You therefore have to look carefully on the inside to see if there is an L or R. However, it can be much easier, because the software should just recognize this, so that the sound is automatically adjusted. So if you use music or a movie that Spatial Audio supports, so it should no longer matter how you put the headphones on. Especially because the earpads are exactly the same.

#3 AirPods Max with USB-C
This one is of course very obvious. The European Union wants USB-C to become the standard, so the iPhone will have to rely on it in the future. So stop with Lightning and immediately switch to USB-C. So let this also be the case for AirPods Max 2. Otherwise, this will soon be the only device for which you still need a Lightning cable.
#4 An extra cable
Apple assumes that you use your AirPods Max wirelessly, because there is no Lightning to 3.5mm cable in the box. For a headset that costs so much money, that is very scanty. You now have to pay 35 euros for a cable, because there is of course no normal 3.5mm connection. That could certainly be a bit more customer-friendly.

#5 The storage pouch
Yes, storing your AirPods Max looks pretty clunky. It’s like walking around with a small handbag. The appearance is still there. The worst part is that the headband is not protected. That way it can still be damaged. Other brands do come with a decent case for premium models. It would be nice if Apple also does this with the AirPods Max 2.
