Do deer still live in Flanders?
I sometimes see a sign along the road that says “beware deer”.
That’s why I wonder if there are still deer living in Flanders.
Answer
I’m guessing you’re talking about the “big game” sign. Big game includes various animals such as roe deer, red deer, fallow deer, mouflon, wild boar. The image of the deer was probably chosen because it has a very recognizable silloutte thanks to it.
So if you see such a sign it just means that this is an area with big game and that you have to be careful. It won’t tell you what species you might encounter there.
For an overview of wildlife in nature you can view the attached links.
So you will see that the roe deer is the only species that really occur frequently in our country in the wild. The other species such as the red deer and the fallow deer are bred in captivity. Sometimes they escape and are observed in nature. In some cases it is possible that new natural populations arise.
If I’m not mistaken, there are a number of projects that try to reintroduce deer in Flanders.
So maybe a lot more natural populations will be spotted with a next inventory.
