I have 2 subwoofers and (3) 2 x 2 pairs of speakers. Can I connect 4 LS to 1 subwoofer?

2 Subwoofers is a bit much to ‘put away’ That’s why I want to connect 2 x 2 LS to 1 subwoofer. Is this possible – e.g. in series??. I have the following LS’s : 1 pair Bose Cube , 1 pair Bose 301 and 1 pair Wharfedale (small models with reflection). I want to hang it above my seat, so that I can hear it better, without increasing the volume. My amplifier does have 2 outputs for LS. The Bose 301 does not have a subwoofer. Can I also use those LS’s without subwoofer ?? I haven’t tested it yet Thanks in advance.

Answer

Hi Roger,

You talk about subwoofers, which you probably connect to the LFE (Low frequency effects) connection of your amplifier.
Large speakers are needed to create the low frequencies of the subwoofer. You can use smaller speakers for higher frequencies.

Because low frequencies create ‘long’ waves, you need a large speaker area. High frequencies make shorter wavelengths, and can therefore come from smaller speakers.
Low frequencies therefore require large speakers.

The advantage of low frequencies is that they are less direction sensitive. So it is more difficult to hear where the sound is coming from.
You can place subwoofers almost anywhere in the room, for example under a table.
