To make steel you need some kind of furnace, but if that furnace is also made of steel, how was it made? Or does the furnace consist of another material with an even higher melting temperature?
Answer
The furnaces in which this steel is remelted (as well as, for example, blast furnaces in which steel is produced) usually also consist of steel. However, these are then covered on the inside with a ceramic material, usually in the form of tiles. These materials have a melting point that is significantly higher than that of steel.
Because these materials are brittle compared to steel, the cladding should be checked regularly and repaired where necessary to prevent leaks or more serious damage.
