Is it possible to record ultrasonic sound, for example on CD or MP3, and to have the sound (which we cannot hear) also played back on, for example, an iPod?
What is the maximum range in Khz that can be recorded digitally.
If possible how do I get such a file?
Thanks in advance.
Answer
Hi Harry,
It is indeed possible to record ultrasound, but not in a simple way.
The devices you indicated yourself, but actually all ‘classic’ audio devices, are limited to the audible spectrum.
The maximum frequency you can record is around 20Khz for the CD.
With MP3, this depends on the settings used during recording. The maximum frequency can even drop to 4Khz.
So to record ultrasonic sound you need a special microphone, special recorders and special speakers.
There are several sites on the internet that indicate what you need, just search for Ultrasonic recording
With kind regards,
Luc.
