Answer

Hi Theo,

This is a photo of a golden mahi (Coryphaena hippurus). The fish is also called dolphin fish in Dutch or sometimes ‘mahi-mahi’ – after its Hawaiian name meaning ‘strong-strong’.

Gold mahi is a tropical and subtropical species that occurs worldwide, including in the Mediterranean. It is a fish that usually grows to 1 meter in length, exceptionally up to 2 meters. They grow quickly and become sexually mature after 4-5 months. For such a large fish, they actually only live for a short time (up to 4 years). Gold mahi live in the open water (pelagic way of life) and form schools that migrate over great distances (migrate).

Due to a lack of catch data, stocks cannot be accurately estimated. Because they grow quickly and become sexually mature, they are more resistant to overfishing.
