Can a fish survive in sparkling water?

I have been wondering for several years whether a fish could survive if I put it in an aquarium filled with, for example, SPA BRUIS. I have never tested it myself as I fear for the life of my new pet.

Answer

Dear Simon,

the spa effervescent aquarium may look special, but I wouldn’t recommend it for several reasons. Your wallet is one of them: spa fizz quickly loses its fizz, so you will have to change water very regularly to maintain the effect. Undoubtedly even more important is the detrimental effect on the finned inhabitants of the aquarium. the CO2 bubbles from the spa fizz settle on the gills of the fish, and can also be formed in the fish. That works like a kind of thrombosis, just like a blood clot in the human brain. The effervescent stones that are sometimes used to introduce oxygen do not have this effect. This is partly due to the size of the bubbles and the pressure differences between the dissolved CO2 in the aerated water (which is released in the form of bubbles when you open the bottle) and the air that is blown into the aquarium via the stone.

CO2 is good for plants in the aquarium, but there are more efficient systems for administering this.

Sincerely,
Tobias
