Is it possible to run an electrical appliance on 1.5 volt batteries?

When you connect 147 of them together do you have 220 volts? If yes, how long could that device work?

Answer

The answer is simultaneously yes and no.

If you place a series of batteries in series, you do indeed get 220 volts, but the batteries themselves have a high internal resistance. You can therefore not use them to supply large currents (eg heating appliances). It can work for appliances with a lower power, but most of those appliances work internally with a lower voltage. The first thing they do is transform the 220 volts down. This is of course not possible with a direct current.
