I found this caterpillar today (August 30, 2010) under an oak tree next to my chalet, in the forest, in Ruurlo/Gelderland/Netherlands. This looks like an oak processionary caterpillar, but I think it’s too late in the year for that. What kind of caterpillar is it?
Asker: karin, 44 years old

Answer
Best,
This is not an oak processionary caterpillar, but the caterpillar of a moth: the armor bearer, Phalera bucephala.
