Which (white) spider is this?

Asker: margot, 30 years old

Answer

Hi Margot, this doesn’t look like a ‘white spider’ but an arachnid that is completely mouldy. What stands out here: a relatively small body (round white ball in the center) with longer legs. Although there are mostly brown house spiders in basements and attics, if it is a house spider you would expect a larger and even twofold moldy central part. So what I think is either a Vibrating Spider, Pholcus phalagoides, or a Haywain, Opiliones (and not a spider in that case), but those are a little less common in homes. See if you can’t find a less – or unmoulded version.
