Do impregnated ‘train sleepers’ that have been used as boulders for fifty years or more and now look like old oak beams still contain harmful substances? In other words, can I use them in the stew?

Answer
Best,
In the past, oak train sleepers were pressure impregnated with creosote oil, and are therefore thoroughly saturated with this product. Even if they have been there for fifty years, carbolineum will still be present in the wood pores.
Burning creosote oil releases all kinds of harmful substances, so don’t do it!
