On February 2, the Roman Church celebrates the feast of Candlemas. Where does this feast come from and is it mentioned in the New Testament or was it invented in one of the earlier councils and why?
Answer
Candlemas are known in ecclesiastical celebrations as the dedication of Jesus in the Temple. According to Old Testament custom, the mother had to be ‘cleansed’ (Leviticus 12:2-4). The name Candlemas comes from the consecration of candles and the light procession before the Mass. The feast follows on from the account of Luke 2:21-40: Jesus’ mission in the temple forty days after his birth, and what Simeon and Anna say about him (and his mother) there.
