If you know someone who is being stalked, and that person doesn’t want to go to the police, can you do it yourself?

For example, can I go to the police, or can only the person being stalked do so?

Answer

Dear Pauline,

Stalking is a “grievance crime”. This means that prosecution is only possible after a complaint (which is not the case for most other crimes). That complaint must come from the person who claims to be stalked. Only that person can file a complaint if he or she is being stalked.
