When one talks about the oldest time / prehistoric times they are never concerned about gods.
Did they have gods then, have they found a sign of religion?
Answer
Religion was developed by people who believe in God or gods.
Religion can be very elementary. For example, you will find few traces of people praying (or cursing) to gods. To build houses of worship (churches, temples, shrines…) a religion must have been developed for some time. The same goes for elaborate writings (eg Bible).
The realization that there is something greater than themselves has gradually developed, along with consciousness and thought. Much was inexplicable, unless there are gods or spirits that cannot be approached directly.
