I’m having a discussion with someone who argues why an automatic gearbox is better now, as well as why it was invented. I think these are effects that people didn’t know when they invented it, so there must have been some other reason for inventing the automatic gearbox. But which?
Answer
Hi Barbara,
The combustion engine in itself is not at all suitable for powering a vehicle. It has no torque at zero speed and its maximum torque is in the middle of its operating range. Only the combination combustion engine, clutch and transfer box is a feasible combination. Since the first cars only had a clutch and switching was not immediately obvious, especially in the US, people immediately looked for automatic solutions. In this way, the combustion engine still had the properties that one would expect from a car.
Good luck.
