As a big (frog) animal lover, I would find it terrible that the contractor simply dampens the pond with a large crane. So I plan a rescue with my friends (who care less) to save as many animals as possible from death. I think now is the best time (autumn) but I like to hear it.

It is best to move the animals before they go into hibernation. Some frogs and salamander species can bury themselves in the mud at the bottom of the pond in winter. So now (late August, before winter) is a good time.
If there are other ponds near your garden, it may be sufficient to drain your pond. The amphibians in it will then look for another shelter themselves.
