I want to reduce the current in my battery from 12 Ampere to 5 Ampere, while maintaining the voltage at 12 Volt. How do I do that?

I have a battery with a voltage of 12V and a current of 12A, but I would like to lower the amperage to 5V while keeping the voltage the same.

Answer

Dear Boaz,
When your battery has a voltage of 12V, the current is determined by the resistance value of the consumer. The current can be reduced by placing a resistor in series with the consumer. This is the simplest method but is not interesting energetically because the resistance will convert a significant part of the electrical energy into heat. You will also have to use a power resistor that can withstand that 5A current and the power that the resistor will have to convert into heat.

A better but also more complex solution is an electronic circuit that reduces the 12V of your battery to a lower voltage, so that the current to the consumer will also decrease.

Kind regards,

Dirk
