Why is a 16 year old allowed to have sex but not watch porn?

This is according to a rumor in the law, but this makes no sense at all, does it?

Asker: Bart, 17 years old

Answer

That wouldn’t make any sense, you’re right. But you shouldn’t always rely on rumours, there are many of them, but few make sense. Many rumors are oversimplified, often exaggerated and simplistic (in the sense of ‘great simplification of reality’).

Here too you could say that there is no smoke without fire, but people get all kinds of things mixed up.

Pornography has not been banned (any longer) in Belgium or the Netherlands since the mid/late 1980s. Pornography is legal as long as no minors are involved in the production. Pornography – such as tobacco products – may not be sold to under 16-year-olds, but I doubt that, in any case, there is no such prohibition in the criminal code or other regulations.

It is prohibited, but for any age, making, selling, possessing or even viewing pornography in which minors (up to 18 years of age) are sexually depicted, used, etc…. For the legal provisions, see: www.stopchildporno.be/nl/kinderpornografie/belgische- Legislation/. For a legal description of the term minor and the reasons why this term was introduced, you can visit http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minderyoung. You can find a lot about the concept of ‘defamation offense’ at http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_moral abuse.

Easy to find and consultable answers to make it clear to you that you can look up and find out a lot yourself. This may be slightly less easy than asking a scientist a question, but it is much more satisfying, instructive and scientific. Asking interesting, critical, unusual, non-obvious questions is the beginning of a scientific attitude. Looking for a not always easy and often complex answer yourself is the desirable next step. Quite exciting, it sometimes seems like detective work. To do!
