I came across this insect and I have never seen it before. It reminded me of a cockroach. I would like to know what it is. Thanks in advance! What kind is it? Is it harmful? Is this species a pest?

Answer
Hi Maryam,
This does indeed look like a cockroach. In terms of species, it seems to be Ectobius pallidus, a rare species. But it certainly is not given the not so brilliant quality of photo. If you have a better photo (I especially need to see the head and neck), you can always send it to me. Then the chance of a correct determination is greater.
Is this species a pest? They mainly occur on sandy soils (heath, dunes). So I expect them mainly there and not in the house. In any case, always avoid stepping on a cockroach (eg to kill them). If it is a female, there is a good chance that she carries eggs with her and they stick very hard to your shoes. Even if you clean them, eggs will remain, mAs a result, you infect your own home by walking around in your shoes.
Just keep an eye out for these critters in your home. If so: intervene by placing traps, otherwise a cockroach can take over your entire house. But, if I’m correct with my determination, that chance is small.
Regards,
Christine
