why does it feel warmer in a village than in a city?

if you cycle from a city (amersfoort) to a village (woudenberg) at night, it will feel warmer in a city. what exactly causes this? just because the buildings are denser?

Answer

Yes, pretty much. The bricks of a building absorb heat and release it again when the temperature drops. A second reason is because the wind naturally also plays fewer tricks in a city and leaves the heat hanging. A third factor, in a large city, is traffic, which also creates heat.
