Is a chicken’s first egg edible?

My chicken just laid its first egg. Is that egg edible?

Asker: Fran, 10 years old

Answer

Yes, the eggs your chickens lay in the garden are just as edible as the eggs you buy in the store.

Isn’t it wonderful, being able to get food from your own garden!
Make sure that the egg is not there too long, then it may have gone bad.
You can test this by placing the egg in a bath of water. If it stays below it is still good, if it floats to the top it is spoiled.
