Are you looking for something to watch and do you have Apple TV Plus? Then you should definitely not miss For All Mankind, even if you have nothing to do with space travel!
For All Mankind is a must watch
There is always something to watch in the crowded streaming market. If a series doesn’t seem interesting or you don’t like it right away in the first hour, you can easily move on to the next one. You really should give the For All Mankind series on Apple TV Plus a shot. In addition to series such as Ted Lasso and Severance, this is also a must-watch!
An original concept
For All Mankind follows an alternate version of history. As you know, the Americans took the first step on the moon, but what if they didn’t? In For All Mankind, it is Russians who step on the space stone first. That sounds like a small adjustment, but it creates a completely different reality.
Because of course the United States will not stop at it and will do everything it can to beat the Russians in the space race. This means that more money goes to research, more space trips are made, that women are going into space earlier and that technological development on Earth is also making a new start.
That’s all very American. The series praises NASA and the land of unlimited possibilities as the ultimate good guys, but you have to look past that a bit. Above all, For All Mankind is an optimistic series about what humanity can achieve if it does its best.
Worn by the characters
Just like Ted Lasso is a series about a football club, but not whether it is actually about football, For All Mankind is a series that is mainly carried by the characters. This is science fiction, but compared to other series in the genre, it is much more human.
Essentially, this is a drama series about people at work and at home, with fantastically written characters. With, among other things, tree of a guy Joel McKinnon in the lead role as the ‘all american’ tough astronaut and the Elon Musk-based entrepreneur Dev Ayesa who does everything he can to go to Mars. Even our own Wubbo Ockels has a small role.
Yet it is the situations in space where these characters are placed in exceptional circumstances that are the highlights of the series. And I mean really sitting on the edge of your seat because of the tension.
It gets better after the first season
There is nothing more annoying than someone who says: no, after so many episodes or seasons the series really gets good. But For All Mankind gets better every season. That doesn’t mean the first season is bad. This first season sets the foundation, introduces all the characters and is very entertaining. Only then the series always manages to surpass itself with the already established characters and new situations.
A very clever way to keep the series interesting is that every season there is a time jump of ten years. That’s disorienting for a while, but since most of the characters return with a slightly different haircut and some makeup to make them look older, you’ll be right back into the story. The time jumps also give you a twice as interesting story, because the makers have both the moment itself and ten years of events to tell.
In addition, these time jumps give the series the opportunity to also make leaps in technology. From all the promo images and trailers you probably already know that the series will make the trip to Mars at some point and that gives the series a whole different vibe.
Fourth season is coming
The great thing is that you can now binge three seasons and the fourth season has already been confirmed. It will probably become increasingly difficult for the actors who were there from the start, because they have to play their characters ten years older again. It is therefore obvious that the focus will be more on the next generation. Given the rising quality in the previous seasons, that will probably be fine.
