Is it dangerous to wash the hair with soapnut shampoo (because soapnuts contain saponin)? Or is this just healthier than shampoos with parabens, dyes and preservatives?
Answer
Hi Anne-Marie,
I’m not a toxicologist myself, but since this question has been open for a while I’ll make an attempt.
Saponins are a class of chemical compounds found in many plants. As the name suggests, they have a soap-like effect. Since saponins also occur in edible plants (in quinoa, for example), it is certainly no problem to wash your hair with them.
Parabens are often added to cosmetic products (including shampoo) to prevent microbial growth and to promote product preservation. According to recent literature, parabens are not harmful when used in the normal recommended dose.
