It is often said that planes are much safer than cars. Is this per flight/trip or only per km travelled? However, the number of passengers by plane is much greater than that of a car and the chance of survival in a car accident is also much higher. Moreover, there are many more cars on the road than there are planes flying.
Answer
Dear Eva,
The chance of dying in a car crash is 1/5,000, while the chance of a fatal plane crash is 1/11,000,000. This takes into account the number of people traveling by plane resp. moved by car.

Bart
