Could there be a connection between the cyclone in Myanmar and the earthquake in China?

In high school I once had a wonderful explanation about plate tectonics. Now I wonder: can there be a connection between the cyclone in Myanmar and the earthquake in China. They are roughly on the same fault line and my teacher then told me that earthquakes and cyclones often occur due to the shifting of the earth’s plates. And because these two events happened so close together, I (and my father) have this question.

Answer

No, the cyclone in Myanmar and the earthquake in China have nothing to do with each other. Cyclones are natural phenomena that take place in the atmosphere, while earthquakes occur deep in the earth.
