I want to be a good protestant, but what should I do and what should I not do?
Answer
Dear Wolf,
What an interesting question you asked! And how positive that you want to be a good Protestant. that looks good.
But what is a good Protestant?
A Protestant is one who puts the Bible above everything: Scripture alone, said the great men of the Reformation. So that means that a Protestant makes time to regularly read the Bible and do Bible study.
To be a good Protestant it is important that you want to serve God and the people. That means you try to live the way God wants you to live. You have the Ten Commandments as a starting point, but the more you read the Bible, the better you will understand what God expects of us humans. You can also pray that God makes clear to you what He expects of you.
It is also important that you have a good Protestant congregation that can support you in your desire to be a good Protestant. In Belgium, Protestants are organized in the United Protestant Church in Belgium (VPKB). The VPKB has its own website and on it you can also find out where a Protestant congregation is in your area – I don’t know where you live and whether you are already a member of a church.
If you have paid attention, you will have noticed that in my story the verb ‘must’ does not occur and I also did not use the expression ‘not allowed’. That’s no coincidence. I think it is much more important that you want to serve God and the people than that you follow rules. Of course rules are important, but as a Protestant you are a free person and no one can tell you what to do and what to do. you have to leave. No one but God. And that’s why we read the Bible – to know what God wants from us.
So even though I’m a professor and a doctor of theology, I still have to read the Bible to know what to do and what not to do.
I wish you the best of luck and let me know if I can help you further.
Kind regards,
