Everyone says the world is going to end in 2012. I’m really scared! I don’t want that to happen. But am I rushing for nothing?

I don’t think you should be afraid of anything. Such total destruction stories pop up all the time. If they were all true, the world would have been destroyed several times in the last few years.
In this specific case it is about the Mayan calendar supposedly only going to the year 2012. It seems to me very hasty to conclude that the Mayas had foreseen that the world would end in 2012. (Some people even claim that this is a calculation error and the real end of the calendar will not be until around 2200, so still a long way off). But let’s face it, if you were to design a calendar count right now, would you worry about it ending in a few hundred years? Then people can just knit a sequel to it, right?
Something similar happened in 1999 – then many people were convinced that the world was going to end because the calendar was ending. And when the world had not ended on January 1, people were quick to say that our calendar is actually wrong because the year zero (which many people accept as the year of Jesus’ birth) is actually three years wrong .
So I wouldn’t worry too much. Those predictions have little to do with science. There are quite a lot of people with a lot of imagination on this planet – and luckily 😉
