No matter how good the performance of a MacBook, the device can get quite warm from time to time. To prevent overheating, it’s time to monitor the temperature of your MacBook (and do something about it if necessary).
It is important to keep an eye on the internal temperature of your MacBook. If your MacBook gets too hot, the laptop can overheat and turn itself off. That’s not exactly useful when you’re just working on something important.
MacBook: how do I check the temperature?
By default, your MacBook does not display a temperature. There are several options to check the temperature anyway. These tools not only give you insight into the temperature of your MacBook, but also offer a lot of other cool statistics. Some tools even offer handy widgets, so you can easily gain insight into important processes.

With the Activity Monitor on your MacBook (or one of the above apps) it is also possible to keep an eye on which processes are active and how much effort they require from your processor, graphics card and memory, among other things. You will find this through spotlight open with Command+Space and Activity Monitor to enter.
The temperature is not shown here, but you can see at a glance which programs are causing your MacBook to get so hot. If your laptop is too hot, it is best to close applications that require a lot of effort. Also pay attention to the number of tabs you have open. As more are open, your laptop will get warmer.

How do I prevent overheating?
According to Apple, the ideal temperature for your MacBook is between 10 and 35 degrees Celsius. Certain MacBook models have a built-in fan to keep things cool, but the newer laptops that run on Apple silicon lack a fan. We therefore have a number of tips on offer to prevent this if your MacBook gets too hot.
- Perform software updates regularly.
- Do not use your laptop in direct sunlight.
- Use your MacBook on a flat surface, in a ventilated area.
- Do not place anything on the keyboard.
- Make sure the ventilation ports are not covered.
- Use a suitable power adapter, preferably an original Apple one.
- As tempting as it is, don’t use your laptop in bed.
