How many stars does the galaxy have?

How big is the galaxy?

How did the galaxy form?

Answer

(1) The solar system has one star : the sun. Eight planets revolve around it, and an unknown number of dwarf planets, asteroids, comets. So the sun itself is a star as there are many others in the galaxy.
The stars you see in the sky at night are therefore not part of the solar system. They are in fact suns too, but at a huge distance. But actually it is better to say: “our sun is also a star” instead of “the other stars are also suns”.
The nearest star is about 10,000 times further than the distance from the sun to the last planet (Neptune). So the solar system is actually very small compared to the distances between the stars.

(2) The galaxy itself contains an estimated 100 billion stars. The stars that we can see with the naked eye are all close to the sun. We cannot see very far in the galaxy, at least not in the direction of the center of the galaxy. There are also huge clouds of gas and dust in the Milky Way that obscure our view. The Milky Way has the shape of a flat disk and is 100,000 light-years in diameter. The sun is about 30,000 light-years from the center.

(3) The Milky Way, as well as the billions of other galaxies in the universe, were formed fairly shortly after the universe was formed. Perhaps concentrations arose in the density of matter from the early universe. Once such a condensation arises, it will attract the matter in the vicinity and thus slowly become larger. One possibility is that this is how smaller galaxies formed first, and that our galaxy formed from a number of those galaxies that came into contact with each other, but the exact mechanism is not yet known.
