Two giants.

It’s a new year, so we all get new opportunities. Poetic, but not quite the purport of what OMT editor-in-chief Mark Hofman wants to give you today. He is very enthusiastic about the technology that will be released this year. For example, he would love to see Android functions appear on the iPhone.
‘A man can dream’, my mother used to say. Now I am a man according to Dutch law, but we all know better how it is mentally. Technology brings out the little boy in me and I keep dreaming about fantastic innovations and happenings. Also at the start of a brand new year.
Five Android features to iPhone
Like me in the second third episode of our Freakin’ Nerdspodcast, I think Android vs iOS is a pointless discussion. Long story short: the operating systems are very close to each other in terms of quality and can only be distinguished in terms of preference.
While I’m stuck in the Apple ecosystem like crazy myself, there are plenty of features on the Android side of the market that I can be “jealous” about. So in this article I follow the advice of mothers and tell you which functionalities I would love to see moved from Android to an iPhone.
#1 Magic Eraser on iPhone
Last year we were able to get acquainted with the Google Pixel 7 Pro for the first time in the Netherlands. So also directly with the Magic Eraser: a magic eraser that can remove objects and people from photos.
It’s a very handy way to give your photos that extra touch. It is of course not new, but I first became acquainted with it in 2022. And to be very honest, I think Apple should also make an effort to provide iPhone users.
#2 Multitask like on an Android
Let’s face it: if an Android does one thing well, it’s multitasking. As far as I’m concerned, Apple can learn a lot from this with its iPhone.
For example, it is possible to use applications by means of a split screen (screen divided by two). At the top you watch a video on YouTube, while at the bottom you let mothers know that you are not coming to dinner tonight.
As far as I’m concerned, the large screens of the iPhone 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max lend themselves perfectly to such functionalities. So what are we waiting for?

#3 Download apps outside the App Store
I have to agree with Dennis a little bit. I don’t like to do it (it’s very difficult to get out of the straw), but there’s no other way. In our Freakin’ Nerdspodcast, he started a discussion about sideloading. A term for installing applications and games from an alternative app store or website.
Apple has not yet given in to it with the iPhone, but the European Union is behind it like crazy. The chance that we will soon be able to get applications from another store is quite high. And to be honest, I’m really looking forward to that.
#4 iPhone in your own style
Android smartphones have been known for years: the many options in terms of appearance. Each icon can be customized, you have access to a whole color palette and there are countless skins to download.

Although Apple gives the iPhone a little taste with widgets and app icons, the real work is still not done. Whether the American company of CEO Tim Cook will ever start it seems unlikely, but personally the new access screen tastes like more.
#5 File Manager of an Android
Apple has its affairs in order as far as I’m concerned, but Android does considerably better than the iPhone when it comes to file management.
The options are limited in this area. The management itself is not very complete and saving files from a PC or laptop is difficult. Time for Apple to take an example from Android in that area.
